The Garzoni family bought a large property in Lugano-Castagnola, near the lakefront with a historic hotel situated in a century-old park with green areas and a tennis court. Carlo Garzoni senior, a well-known builder and developer, launched an invitation-only competition to build around one hundred residential apartments. Given the large space required Camponovo was concerned that it would make it difficult for the hotel to continue operating if part of the park and the tennis court disappeared. He therefore decided to surround the property with a wall, which in fact took the form of a long narrow building that surrounded and protected the extensive park. Thus the hotel’s valuable assets were preserved: its view, exposure to the sun and greenery. Camponovo was awarded the commission, The twists in the plan of the long ribbon-like building give rhythm to and divide up the façades. Those facing the street have an urban appearance with closed volumes and bold cylindrical elements containing the stairs. Those towards the garden are, quite rightly, more open to take advantage of the wonderful view of the lake and the greenery, which is not easy to find in town. Construction took place during the second half of the 1980s and was soon completed. The high quality of the materials, arrangement of the interior areas and the details met with immediate success. The ochre concrete building had a new peaceful, well-tended, inner garden with pools of water that contrasted with the tall trees in the park. The link between public and private was created by a broad opening that divides the complex into two blocks. The movement of the façades marks and emphasizes the entrance with steps and decorated paving towards the piazza. Subsequently the owners commissioned the architect to design and build a three-storey hotel with suites. This completes the external space, acts as a backdrop to the park and merges with it, as it is partially covered by jasmine climbing over the metal structures forming the design of the façade. An interesting element is the glassed-in area, like a winter garden with suspended walkways, joining the old and new sections of the hotel.
