The relationship of Villa Ferrari with the environment is emphasized by two meteorological factors that fundamentally impacted the project design: wind and sun. Being situated at one end of the Tremona valley, the terrain is subject to strong northern winds. Some form of protection was therefore needed, which was accomplished quite naturally by placing the villa below the level of the town road and only levelling the land slightly. Furthermore, in this way the building does not block the view of the valley below for people using the road. Meanwhile, the hilly region of Tremona, with its southern exposure, also experiences high levels of exposure to sunlight in the summer. Thus areas of cool shade were created through the use of projecting roofs (counterbalanced by openings on the east/west axis to provide more light for the living room), along with the creation on the north side of an inner courtyard that echoes the building typology of the region’s oldest houses. An integral part of the pedestrian entrance, the courtyard also connects the main block of the villa with the garage that abuts the elevation near the town road.
